Two gang members were arrested after a video of them chopping the body of a woman was linked to the remains that were accidentally dug up by a JCB.
According to the police, the deceased, Gabriela Lima Santana, was reported missing on March 13, a day before her 22nd birthday. Her dismembered body was found in a suitcase on March 24.
Police believe that the woman was murdered days before she was reported missing.
Her death was suspected to have been ordered by a rival gang as part of a retaliation attack, police said.
Santana’s body was discovered by city council workers who were operating a JCB, a mechanical digger, to remove waste from a drainage ditch in Capao da Canoa, southern Brazil.
One of the victim’s hands flung out and landed in the water as the JCB attempted to remove trash from the drainage. The horrified workers watched the hand floating on the surface of the water.
Forensic experts later recovered Santana’s severed head, torso, legs, and arms from the scene. They were stuffed inside a black suitcase, according to the news site Caboco.
According to the police, two kitchen knives and a saw believed to be the weapons used to butcher the young woman were also found inside the bag.
The suitcase also contained stones that were placed to make the bag sink, the Hora da Noticicia reported.
The woman was identified from her fingerprints and a distinctive tattoo on her body which was associated with a local gang.
The investigation led the detectives to link the murder to a horrifying video the police had received on March 1, in which a smiling assassin was seen dismembering a woman’s body in a bathroom.
In the disturbing video, several bin bags containing the victim’s body parts were seen scattered on the bathroom floor.
Police have not revealed how they came across the video.
Following an investigation, officers traced the location seen in the video and reached an apartment in the neighborhood of Rio Branco, where one suspect was arrested.
According to the police, Santana was believed to be murdered in the apartment which reportedly had ties to a local criminal gang.
Police have arrested a 49-year-old man reportedly identified from the footage, and a 23-year-old, who allegedly recorded the clip. Their identities were not disclosed.
This is an ongoing investigation.
