Two police officers and 20-gang members were killed in a shootout after gunmen ambushed police officers on patrol in Michoacan State Mexico. The Knights Templar drug cartel used their vehicles to block the road an attack police. The Mexican government has been making attempts to come down harder on the drug cartels and the cartels have vowed not to go down without a fight.
The police and federal agents were able to take on the Knights Templar cartel when they were ambushed. Over 20 cartel members were killed and an unknown number were injured. Two officers were killed by the cartel and 15 were wounded.
The police battle took place in the Tierra Caliente region. This area is known for its gang and drug related violence. Fox News reports the attackers were equipped with high powered rifles and grenades.
Battles between police and the Templars drug cartel have escalates in the past week in the Western areas of Mexico. Since Thursday there have been four officers killed by the gang. The people living in these areas riddled with gang violence have also been targeted by the Knights Templar for standing up for themselves.
The people living in these areas have had enough of the violence. They have begun taking a stand against the cartel. On Monday five members of a community self-defense watch were killed when gunmen opened fire on them.
Over the past few months these self-defense squads have been springing up and have taken over policing their towns. The Mexican people say they will no longer be held hostage by the violence, kidnappings and constant killings brought on by the cartels.
