Warning! Spoilers ahead, do not read any further if you have not read George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire!”
The next character to fall victim to the iron fist of George R.R. Martin will most likely be Shae, Tyrion’s lover. As if things can’t get worse the youngest Lannister lion while he sits locked away in the black cells for a crime he states he did not commit, his father and scheming sister have finally discovered his secret. The threat against Shae’s life has been looming in previous seasons of “Game of Thrones” however, now with Tyrion indisposed to protect her, Shae is more vulnerable than ever.
In the premiere episode of Season 4 “Two Swords,” one of Cersei’s ladies within King’s Landing finally spotted Shae leaving Tyrion’s chambers and informed the reigning Queen Regent of what she say. Cersei who has always had a tumultuous relationship with her younger brother informed their powerful father of Shae’s presence in the capital, despite his recent marriage to Sansa Stark. Shae’s demise was foreshadowed again in episode 2 “The Lion and the Rose,” when Varys reminded Tyrion of his father’s very serious threat to “hang the next whore” he catches his son with. Amidst the chaos of the Royal Wedding and ultimately Joffrey’s poisoning, Cersei pointed out Shae at the feast to her father, he told his guards to have her brought to the Tower of the Hand, his personal chambers.
While Tyrion had not yet realized his sister and father had already discovered Shae’s identity, he did head Varys’s warning and decided to break off his relationship with her, rather coldly, and attempted to ship her away to Pentos. While Tyrion was sending her away for her own protection and his love for her, the conclusion to the relationship was devastating to Shae who was escorted to the ship for Pentos to Bronn. But it is most likely that Shae never made it to the ship, let alone Pentos. Bronn was nonchalant with Tyrion when questioned about Shae’s departure, leading fans to believe that she never truly left.
In episode 3, “Breaker of Chains” fans will learn that Tywin’s men to intercept Shae and bring her to the Tower of the Hand, but the result of the interaction is surprising. Shae will be killed but not by Tywin, she will instead be killed by Tyrion when he discovers her in bed with his father. Tyrion’s killing spree will not end there because he ends up also murdering his own father Tywin by shooting him with a crossbow. Tyrion will then escape the black cells and King’s Landing, essentially freeing himself from Cersei’s persecution.
