In 2015, Fresh Off The Boat made history as the first Asian-American sitcom to air in 20 years later. Five years later, the groundbreaking show is coming to an end - and a rather tumultuous one at that. The Huang Family, led by Constance Wu and Randall Park, will be saying good-bye to fans after an hour-long series finale on February 21, 2019.

This pretty much confirms that there will be no season seven for the show, something of which Constance Wu must be happy about - after all, she did tweet her disappointment when the show was renewed for season six.

In May 2019, the show’s renewal was announced and Wu made it clear that she was not happy. She initially tweeted, “So upset right now that I’m literally crying. Ugh. F*ck it.” She went on to say, “F*cking hell.”

She later on explained that she was temporarily upset as shooting for the season would mean that she’d have to give up a project that she was really passionate about. Although she had no regrets about “being messy and imperfect in public”, she did regret not taking into account how it might have affected people I care about, like the kids on the show. I love them. I had a talk with each kid. I wanted to make sure they knew I acted out of a moment of passion that was not reflective of how I feel about them.”

Wu went on to share that she was initially scared going back on-set following the backlash that she had received for the tweets. “The public was so pissed off at me that I assumed (my cast mates) were, too,” she shared during an interview.

During her first shoot back, she had apologised to Hudson Yang (who plays Eddie Huang in the show) saying that she was sorry if what she said had affected him and that it wasn’t a reflection of how she felt about him or the show.

She said that his reply gave her a “lot of humble pie to eat” as the young cast member had apparently said, “‘Constance, no, we love you. It’s okay, don’t worry about it. We know you.’” The reply moved the Crazy Rich Asians star and brought her to tears. She’s since then expressed that she’s grateful to be back on the show - a sentiment that is shared by the cast and crew, says ABC’s entertainment president, Karen Burke.
