A math teacher from the Alabama junior high school has been charged with two counts of sexual misconduct after having sex with a student under the age of 17.
Charged was Ashton Alana McCluskey who has been serving as a math teacher for the Brooks High School since 2017 according to AL.com. The 26-year-old is married and is reportedly a former cheerleader at the University of Alabama. She attended the same high school before and was awarded a Distinguished Young Woman of Lauderdale County scholarship while a senior back in 2011.
It was in January when McCluskey was placed on administrative leave after word got out that she had sex with a student. Last February, she was charged with two counts of sexual misconduct with a student who was aged below 17. According to WHNT, it was McCluskey who had initiated sex. Further details remain unavailable with the case currently undergoing investigation.
“The student is a family member of one of our employees, so for that reason the case was referred to the SBI for further investigation,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton stated.
McCluskey turned herself in last Wednesday but was later released after posting a $50,000 bond. She has also been ordered not to have any contact with the victim, said to be a relative of the Sheriff’s Office.
According to WAFF-TV, there was an unnamed person connected to the case working for the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office. Her case was assigned to the State Bureau of Investigation to avoid a conflict of interest.
McCluskey faces up to 20 years in prison if she is convicted. She has yet to enter a plea and appears to not have an attorney, for now, to speak on her behalf per court documents.
