The wife of a soccer star player from Paraguay was killed on Sunday, Jan. 20, during a concert in an amphitheater after a gunfight broke out in the VIP section of the venue.
Cristina Vita Aranda, a 29-year-old model, was with her husband Ivan Torres when a gunfight happened in the Jose Asuncion Flores Amphitheatre. Aranda was shot and killed while four other people in the VIP section were severely injured, according to TMZ.
Aranda was taken to the hospital and medical professionals attempted to revive her, but to no avail. Torres himself was not shot or injured, but he did suffer a panic attack due to the incident, the New York Post reported.
The Paraguayan soccer star broke his silence on Monday with a post on Instagram.
"One of Cristina's priorities was to be close to her followers," his note expressed in Spanish as he invited fans to say "their last goodbye" to her by visiting her public wake at a funeral home in Asunción, Paraguay, reported The Independent.
"Out of respect in this delicate moment, the entrance to the wake room will be exclusively for family and friends," continued the statement. "We appreciate your desire to accompany us in this delicate moment. We ask you to use the space on the ground floor to leave a dedication and pay tribute to Vita."
“She was intubated when she arrived and attempts were made to resuscitate her for at least 25 minutes after she went into cardiac arrest. She died after the lengthy attempts to save her life,” Yolanda Gonzalez, director of the Itaugua Nacional Hospital, said.
Police officers are still investigating the incident, but from their knowledge, they believe that Aranda was not being targeted by the shooters and that her death was largely accidental.
“The initial police theory is that she was a collateral victim. She was shot in the head and didn’t survive,” Police Chief Benicio Ramirez said.
Torres and Aranda have three children together, and though Aranda announced that she was divorcing Torres, many believe that she and Torres were attempting to work it out and save their union together.
By Tuesday, Torres paid tribute to Aranda with a post of their wedding pictures on Instagram.
“This is how I will remember you my love, with that beautiful smile and that big heart,” he wrote. “I promise that I will miss you very much, nothing will be the same without you, just to thank you for these 11 years by my side, for teaching me to recognize my mistakes, to forgive, to believe, to be better, to love unconditionally.”
Paraguayan Primera División side Olimpia, Torres’ soccer team, suspended practice on Monday following the incident.
