A popular fast-food restaurant in the Philippines was forced to close down one of its branches after a mother who ordered fried chicken ended up getting something different – a deep-fried towel. The order was placed on early Wednesday that left a customer named Alique Perez frustrated.
Perez shared via Facebook the disappointment after ordering from a Jollibee food store located at the Bonifacio Global City, Makati Philippines. She originally ordered chicken for her son but found something odd when the food arrived via Grab delivery.
When she found it super hard to slice, Perez opened the piece and was surprised to find a deep-fried towel instead.
“This is really disturbing... How the hell do you get the towel in the batter and even fry it!?!? Yung totoo (The truth)?” she said in the post.
She went on to add that her discovery was pretty disturbing. Perez went on to question the other things that were in the fryer, suggesting that other stuff that was deep-fried could be contaminated as a result of the towel.
After making its round in social media, Jollibee Food Corporation issued a statement and said that it will be closing its Bonifacio Global City branch as a result of the incident. The branch will be closed for three days as they review its compliance with the company’s procedures, ABS-CBN News reported. This will include retraining its personnel.
"Jollibee has carefully developed and complied with food preparation systems to ensure that we deliver excellent quality products and customer satisfaction," the company’s statement read.
The incident has also dragged McDonald’s Philippines in the mix. A social media post came out after the deep-fried towel incident bearing the familiar logo of the rival food chain and a plate of fried chicken. McDonald’s Philippines PR and Communications Senior Manager Adi Timbol-Hernandez stressed that the post did not come from them and that they would not produce any derogatory material against any brand.
"To reiterate, this piece of content was not made by McDonald’s Philippines and was never posted on any of the brand’s digital assets," Hernandez stated.
