Authorities in Florida said that a man battered and repeatedly stabbed his mother after planning to kill her for a year.
Logan Lopez, 24, allegedly admitted to his crime over the weekend, according to the Clearwater Police Department in Florida.
Police said that Logan Lopez asked his mother, Mary Beth Lopez, 53, to bring his mail to his apartment because it had been addressed to his family's home.
Major Natalia Illich-Hailey of the Clearwater Police Department told reporters (via People) that the Florida man invited his mother into his apartment to show off his new furniture.
Illich-Hailey did observe that on Saturday, the suspect shut the door after she entered. Then, as the Florida man approached his mother from behind, he repeatedly slashed her with a knife and hit her with a hammer.
Then, a neighbor in Clearwater reported hearing a lady yelling and beating coming from Lopez's condo at The Palms at Countryside. Soon after the authorities came, they discovered the suspect's mother dead.
WFLA-TV reported that officers arrested Logan Lopez without incident, and he admitted to luring his mother to his house after a year of preparing to put "an end to her."
The Florida man said that his mother "enslaved" him, which is why he killed her.
Logan understood what he was going to do and what would occur, claims Illich-Hailey. For that reason alone, he invited his mother to stay with him.
Before his arrest, according to the police, he never had any legal issues, save for the time in February when he was briefly held and given emergency mental health services under Florida's Baker Act.
If a person cannot assess their own treatment needs, the statute allows family members to have a loved one detained for mental health treatments.
According to Crime Online, Lopez is accused of killing his mother in the first degree. He has already been lodged in the Pinellas County Jail on that accusation by the police early Sunday morning.
People claimed that Margaret Russell, a public defender, is currently representing the Florida man. Chief Assistant Public Defender Greg Williams expressed his "saddened by this tragic incident" on behalf of Russell in a statement to People.
Logan Lopez "was just arrested, and no formal charges have been filed by the prosecutor." According to WLFA, the Florida man's mother has already had an autopsy. It will reveal how severely she was hurt before she passed away.
