"The Flash" is looking to bring in a new, mysterious series regular. According to TV Line, the recurring character is expected to be an inquisitive contemporary to Barry (Grant Gustin) who is "as smart as he is intuitive." The problem with his curiosity, however, is that this character does not take anything at face value. The site also implied that the character is hiding a secret of his own while he takes it upon himself to discover what makes Barry tick.
Based on "The Flash" comic characters, a scientist like Edwin Gauss (who is also The Folded Man) and Curt Engstrom (The Alchemist) or even Alexander Petrov (Mister Element) could all be good contenders for the described character.
As Screen Rant reports, the big question here is will this recurring character be in the past where Barry is now, or in the present where Barry will presumably make his way back? The question can really only be answered if we knew which direction the writers were taking Season 3. At this point, we only have guesses that the season will deal with some "Flashpoint" storyline, but we do not know how much of it will take place in the alternate timeline.
Meanwhile, if what Carlos Valdes (who plays Cisco Ramon and Vibe) said at his panel during MegaCon is true, then we may indeed see some "Flashpoint" storyline take place in Season 3. Valdes said, "I think there’s every chance of a Flashpoint paradox. Some people expressed reservation about that, like: "Why are we going there?" And some people are all about it. I can say, without a doubt, wherever we go from here, it’s going to be unique and it’s going to be different. It’s going to honor the original chronology and the original lore while at the same time providing a new spin on it and I think it’s that spirit that’s allowed our shows to do as well as they do so I ask the fandom to have faith."
While Valdes' comments are not a confirmation, he does come as close to confirming the news without spoiling the plot for the third season.
"The Flash" will begin production next month in July and will premiere in October.
