With the exit of Flappy Bird from the emerging game market a slew of copycat games emerged on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s app store. Well now it seems that both stores have decided to crack down on Flappy Bird clones. A new report from TechCrunch said that the app store by Apple and Google Play Store are coming down hard on developers looking to replicate the Flappy Bird app by rejecting games that come with the word “Flappy” in the title.
However, according to The Verge, an Apple spokesperson has said that the company is not simply rejecting games with “flappy” in the title, but also those games that are trying to trick customers into making them believe that their app is somehow associated with the original Flappy Bird game. Google on the other hand is being much more to the point, though. Anyone producing a Flappy Bird clone now is creating “spam” and needs to stop.
Developer Ken Carpenter has been a casualty of this new strict order by Apple and Google. Carpenter, the creator of “Flappy Dragon,” says Apple rejected his game saying, “we found your app name attempts to leverage a popular app.” The Vancouver-based developer also noted Apple said of his app, “content that could be misleading to users, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.”
Carpenter also spoke to The Verge about his game, Flappy Dragon, and his run-in with Apple. “I had included a sentence about Flappy Dragon being the best flappy game now that Flappy Bird was dead,” Carpenter said, adding that he was able to submit the game on Google Play by changing the name to “Derpy Dragon.”
Unfortunately, The new policy has not only affected new games, but many current games on the mobile market as well, forcing them to change their titles. For instance IBTimes reports, “Flappy Bee,” one of the earlier games to come with the “Flappy” name, has now been forced to changed the games name to “Jumpy Bee.”
