President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day in the United States of America. On this day, which is not an official federal holiday, we commemorate the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on the same day in 1777. On June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania was the first state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday.

During this holiday, several U.S. states organize events and parades, Fairfield, Washington has the oldest continuing parade, and Quincy, Massachusetts claims to have the longest-running parade of its kind in the nation. The largest parade though, can be found in Troy, New York, which typically draws 50,000 spectators.

Flag Day falls on a Sunday this year, and that means there are a lot of activities you can plan for the weekend. Since Sunday usually means family day for most Latino people I know, we gathered up a list of events you can enjoy all together. Enjoy!

1) Pick patriotic outfits: If you have little ones have fun with it! Let them dress you, and let them pick outfits for every member of the family.

2) Game day: You can make it an educational day by creating a trivia game with facts about Flag Day.

3) Get artsy: There’s a lot of Flag Day crafts that you can play with, creating your one flag, or a patriotic pinwheel, a string of stars. Be creative. The kids will love it.

4) Storytelling: Have a bonfire and share Flag Day stories with them. Adding s’mores can’t hurt!

5) Patriotic Baking: You can gather everyone up in the kitchen and make star-shaped, or flag-shaped cookies.

6) Go to a museum: Do some research and find out if there are any historical museums or monuments nearby.

7) Attend a Parade: Most states have a Flag Day parade, or festival. Check your local listings, pack some snacks, and enjoy the day with your family!
