The first ‘Scream VI’ trailer dropped taking the iconic killer to the streets of New York City. After five bloody movies, next year’s “Scream 6” will see the return of Ghostface as the masked killer is back to face sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega). The trailer takes his survivors far away from Woodsboro in the latest installment of the horror slasher franchise.
Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro far behind and start a fresh chapter. The sisters wanting to build a new life leave behind the scenes of the traumatic massacres and end up in the Big Apple. In the previous Scream the fifth chapter, it was revealed that Sam is the illegitimate daughter of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich), one of the original Ghostface killers. This made her a target for disgruntled fans of the fictional franchise “Stab,” inspired by the Woodboro murders. So, moving to New York City was supposed to be a fresh start for Sam and a chance for some anonymity. Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Mindy Meeks-Martin”), and Mason Gooding (“Chad Meeks-Martin”), from the 2022 sequel (Scream 5) are also making a return to the franchise.
As expected, unfortunately for Sam and Tara, their identities won’t remain a secret for long. Even in the big city amongst millions of people they still find themselves involved with yet another Ghostface copycat. Someone else is trying to finish the job, and take down the sisters. The trailer also introduced the cast of Scream VI, with returning cast members and some newcomers. In typical Ghostface fashion everyone is simultaneously a suspect and a victim. In Scream 6 fans can already start guessing who’s going to be behind the killings this time.
“Scream” veteran Courteney Cox returns as reporter Gale Weathers, alongside Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding. Hayden Panettiere will also be back as Kirby Reed. Newcomers to the cast include Samara Weaving, Dermot Mulroney, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and more.
Surprisingly, the one key character not returning for “Scream 6” is Neve Campbell, who played franchise star Sidney Prescott since the first film (1996). The series originally started with a teenage girl (Campbell) being terrorized by a killer that uses horror films as part of a deadly game. Over the years more masked killers have popped up as copycats terrorizing a new generation of characters. Campbell revealed in June 2022 that she was unhappy with her offer to return for “Scream 6” and declined to appear.
“I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years,” Campbell said in a statement at the time. “And as a woman in this business, I think it’s really important for us to be valued and to fight to be valued.”
The mystery horror “Scream” franchise first debuted back in 1996, and has been kicking out sequels since. The first four films in the franchise were directed by influential director Wes Craven, but last year’s fifth installment was helmed by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who returned for the sixth film. Screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who penned 2022’s “Scream,” are also back for the latest movie.
