Attorney Fernando Chavez is the eldest son of iconic civil rights leader Cesar Chavez, who taught him that those with a voice should use it to speak for those without one. Fernando Chavez believes in giving back to the community. Currently, Mr. Chavez is hosting an online auction on CharityBuzz.com, to benefit the deserving youths in After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles programs; a non-profit that he sits on the Board of Directors.
Founded in 2002 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and with noteworthy support from Program Ambassador Kobe Bryant, After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) is a leading after-school program provider whose programs educate, enlighten and inspire thousands of students each day through after-school activities centered around academic support; health, fitness and nutrition; the visual and performing arts; and youth leadership and community service learning.
Approximately 85% of the students served by the organization are of Hispanic heritage. “I am very excited to be hosting an online auction to help the children in After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles programs,” says Fernando. “The organization offers wonderful opportunities to young people, giving them experiences to help build a successful future.”
After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles brings innovative, cutting-edge academic and enrichment programs to K-12 students that contribute to reducing drug use, crime and violence; while increasing their safety during the after school hours. ASAS-LA serves 17,000 students annually across 45 schools located in deserving areas throughout LA County.
Individuals bid on the CharityBuzz.com auction for the chance to have lunch with Fernando Chavez on the famed Cesar Chavez Blvd in Los Angeles. The auction winner will enjoy spending time with Mr. Chavez, speaking to him about his father's life, legacy, and contribution to society. After lunch, a picture with Fernando Chavez will take place in front of his favorite Los Angeles mural of his father.
“Those who meet me say that it is like a legacy coming alive,” says Mr. Chavez. “That’s truly humbling. I know to them, meeting me is like touching the legacy my father created. That is something I cling to.” Mr. Chavez decided to become a lawyer so he could continue the work of his
father, who taught him about the honor in the fight for justice.
With the "Cesar Chavez" movie, releasing in theaters across the nation on March 28, 2014, Mr. Chavez hopes that the publicity surrounding the film highlighting his father’s life’s work and legacy would potentially draw attention to his own current philanthropic dedication to the Hispanic
people. Fernando’s relationship with this father is a subtopic of the movie.
“Everyone deserves a chance to succeed,” says Fernando. “I hope the money raised through this online auction for After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles children will enable me to further instill these values for them.”
