A jail officer who reportedly had sexual relations with an inmate has been arrested on charges of attempting to smuggle meth into prison.
Jolienne Salinas, 38, of Beeville, has been busted for attempting to provide methamphetamine to an inmate with whom she was having sexual relations. A federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment on Aug. 11 against Salinas and she was taken into custody by law enforcement officers on Tuesday, Aug. 17, KRIS-TV reported.
Salinas was reportedly working as a correctional officer at FCI Three Rivers, a medium-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp, at the time of the smuggling attempt.
In early May 2020, Salinas reportedly provided or attempted to provide meth to an inmate. In addition to this, it was discovered that she allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with the same inmate from approximately September 2019 to May 2020, according to the United States Department of Justice.
Salinas could face up to 20 years in prison for providing narcotics to a jail inmate if she is convicted of the charges against him. In addition to this, she faces another 15 years of imprisonment for having sexual relations with a jail inmate. Salinas also faces a US$250,000 possible fine on each count of conviction.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a female correctional officer in California was reportedly sentenced to 210-days in jail and two years of probation after she was caught having sex with an inmate in full view of 11 other prisoners.
Tina Gonzalez, 27, pleaded guilty in April this year to felony charges of sexual activity by a detention facility employee with a consenting confined adult and possession of drugs or an alcoholic beverage in a jail facility, Latin Times reported.
Gonzalez, who had been with corrective services since 2016, allegedly cut a hole in her uniform pants to engage in intimate encounters with the prisoner. On several occasions, the sexual acts were reportedly done within the view of 11 other prisoners.
The woman also supplied the same inmate with razors and a cell phone. She's also been accused of providing critical jail intelligence to the man and alerted him when his cell was going to be searched by authorities.
Judge Michael Idiart sentenced her to seven months in the county jail followed by two years of probation.
