A female correctional officer in California with a “depraved mind” has been slapped with a 210-day jail term and two years of probation on Tuesday, after she was caught having sex with an inmate in full view of 11 other jailbirds during her shift at work.
The suspect, Tina Gonzalez, 27, pleaded guilty in April this year to felony charges of sexual activity by a detention facility employee with a consenting confined adult and possession of drugs or an alcoholic beverage in a jail facility, Fox News reported.
Her offenses came to light after Fresno County Sheriff’s Office staff were alerted about her relationship with a prisoner in December 2019. Gonzalez’s behavior lasted more than a year before her arrest.
The suspect, who had been with corrective services since 2016, would allegedly cut a hole in her uniform pants to facilitate her intimate encounters with the prisoner. On several occasions, the lewd acts inside the cell were reportedly done within the view of 11 other prisoners.
The woman had also reportedly supplied the same inmate with razors and a cell phone to get in touch with her. She would provide critical jail intelligence to the man, alerting the inmate when his cell was going to be searched by authorities. The prisoner was caught with the cellular device in his cell in 2019, according to the New York Post.
Gonzales left her post in May, a short time after authorities unraveled the scandal tied to her post at the facility.
Fresno’s Assistant Sheriff Steve McComas, the suspect's former boss, told the court that her behavior was a result of her depraved mind, noting Gonzales showed no repentance over her appalling actions.
“She took an oath which she betrayed and in doing so endangered her coworkers’ lives,” he said. "She continually calls and has sexually explicit conversations with the inmate in question and boasts about the crimes she carried out."
McComas, who shares 26 years with correctional services, asserted that while he had witnessed many “pretty disgusting things” during his lengthy stint in office, Gonzalez’s sex session in full view of other inmates had shocked him to the core.
He had called for a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in prison against the suspect. Prosecutors had been seeking a 15-month sentence.
However, Judge Michael Idiart sentenced her Tuesday to seven months in the county jail followed by two years of probation because of her early plea and lack of criminal history, News.com.au noted.
“I think what you did was terrible, stupid and you have ruined your career,” Idiart concluded. “But I also believe that people can redeem themselves and you have the rest of your life to do that. Good luck."
