Fefita la Grande, famous merengue artist and accordion player, finally got her American visa approved. The performer had been denied her visa for 13 years, when reportedly, a relative of hers tried to sneak into the United States illegally, while traveling in the same flight as the artist. Fefita was granted a waiver by US immigration authorities and got a P1 visa, which is granted to “members of an internationally recognized entertainment group.” However, it will only be valid until November, 2014.

The artist’s manager, Vidal Cedeño was the one who uploaded a photo of the visa stamped on Fefita’s passport to the company’s Facebook page. “I opted to publish a photo of the visa to prove that it had really been approved,” Cedeño said. “I’m the one who has the responsibility over her and her musicians, who had already been approved for the visa before with no issues.” When she found out about the news, Manuela Josefa Taveras, real name of Fefita la Grande, couldn’t contain her excitement and happiness.

“La Mayimba” said it was her manager who told her, since the passport with the visa was delivered to him. She also thanked God, the media and everyone who always stood by her side. Fefita added that when people found out, she got calls from all over the world to congratulate her, even from France. She also sent a message to all the Dominicans living in the United States, who want to see her again on stage in this country. Luckily, they might actually get their wish come true, since Cedeño has announced plans to bring “La Vieja Fefa” to New York. He’s in talks with several sponsors, including the famous Latino radio station La Mega.

“I want to do something out of the ordinary because she deserves it,” Cedeño said. “This month marks her 50th anniversary in the business and we want to celebrate it big time.” The manager wants at least 10 to 15 artists sharing stage and honoring Fefita in a show that would take place either in June or July.
