FC Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, scored a double on Wednesday against Ajax-Amsterdam tying him for the UEFA Champions League scoring record with Raúl. Messi is still a goal away from breaking the record, but is already being hailed as “simply the best” by his peers.
Former, Barcelona player and current Ajax (youth) coach, Ronald de Boer, claimed Messi as “the best” ahead of the game on Wednesday. One of soccer’s greatest points of contention is who is better, Messi or Ronaldo. Many experts believe that the player that breaks Raúl’s record first, will have the advantage in that debate.
Messi’s goal in front of the net on Wednesday tied Spain’s Raúl for the all-time UCL scoring record with 71 total goals. The 37-year old Raúl, has agreed to join the New York Cosmos out of the NASL league in the United States for next season. Both Messi and Ronaldo should surpass Raúl’s record by Thanksgiving, or by the end of the year at the latest.
“He is unique. There can be replicas of some players, like Cristiano for example. The Portuguese (star) is good, very good, but Messi is simply the best,” said De Boer.
