Police believe that 16-year-old Isaiah Levine and a 24-year-old man were both victims of the same shooting. While the older male survived the shooting, the teenager was fatally wounded.
Police claim that the teen was a member of a notorious local gang while his family denies the claim. While the incident is being investigated, as of Monday, Oct. 18 no arrests had been made.
On Friday, Oct. 15 night, Isaiah Levine was hanging out with a group near Delancey and Suffolk streets. Around 8:30 p.m. they were approached by the gunman. The gunman started shooting at the group and absconded after the attack.
Levine was shot in the face during the attack. Emergency services rushed him to Bellevue Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The older man who was also shot during the incident went to Mount Sinai Beth Israel by himself. He was transferred to another hospital and he is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries, NY Daily reported. Authorities have not revealed the identity of the second victim of the attack.
According to New York Post, Levine was a well-known member of the Pitt Street Crew. The teenager has a criminal record since his earliest arrest at the age of 10. Between 2018 to 2021, the victim reportedly had 11 felony arrests. Most of the teenager’s criminal record is sealed as he is was a minor.
Levine’s last arrest was in January 2020. He was arrested and charged with armed robbery. He is thought to have been a part of a slew of robberies of Asian-Americans in the Lower East Side. Following the robbery on Jan. 22, 2020, he appeared in court on Sept. 2, 2021. He was scheduled to return to court in November for his next hearing.
The teenager’s friends and family mourn his loss. His aunt, who refused to be named, denied that Levine was in a gang. His brother claimed that the teen was recording a music video when he was attacked. The teenager’s mother, who he lived with, shared her heartbreak at the loss of her child. 50-year-old Valerie Andrews hopes that the police will bring the gunman responsible for her son’s death to justice.
Police are yet to make any arrests. They found five .40 caliber shell casings at the scene of the crime. The hunt for the gunman is ongoing.
