A pregnant woman was tragically shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend on Sunday, Sept. 12, after returning to her baby shower and finding him in a fight with her current partner.
Shanice Young, a 31-year-old woman from Manhattan, reportedly arrived home at her apartment after a baby shower for her unborn child on late Sunday. However, her ex-boyfriend had seemingly waited for and expected her return as he shortly started engaging in a volatile fight with the victim's current partner outside her home.
Young attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation when she was shot, according to the New York Post.
“They were unloading the stuff from the baby shower,” Candice, her neighbor, said. “The gifts were lined up in the hallway, and she was going back outside when she got shot.”
Police officers and emergency medical services responded to the shooting but were unable to save Young from her fatal bullet wounds. The pregnant victim was declared dead at the scene.
“I saw them trying to resuscitate her, pumping her chest,” Jose Morales, the super of the building, said. “There was a police officer who was trying so hard to save her. He was pumping and pumping and wasn’t going to stop.”
Young has lived in the area for three years, first to care for her mother who died of ovarian cancer, and then staying to raise her little sister. She is survived by her six-year-old daughter, who appears to have also witnessed the brutal incident, according to the New York Daily News.
“I just can’t sleep — I guess I’m in shock,” Thurman Young, her father, said. “The whole of Harlem is mourning right now.”
The gunman, her ex-boyfriend, is still at large. She reportedly had three orders of protection against her former lover, who cheated on her when they were together.
“Shanice was scared to death of him,” Thurman Young said.
The neighbors of the community have been left shocked by the horrifying situation, noting that it happened to someone who was an upstanding citizen of the building.
“She was there anytime of the day,” a neighbor said, describing Shanice and her actions for the community. “If you needed a plate of food or a bottle of water, she was there. If you needed a coat or a sweater, she was there.”
“I’m shaken up by it,” Candice said. “Who the f**k shoots a pregnant woman? You’ve got to be out of your mind.”
