Three members of a family, including an 8-year-old girl, allegedly died by suicide in Agra, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police sources said on Wednesday, July 5.
Sonu Sharma (30), his wife Gita (28), their daughter were found hanging dead at their home Wednesday morning. Their 10-year-old son, Shyam, is said to have survived the mass suicide pact, reports said.
“On Wednesday around 7 am sonu's son shyam came downstairs and went outside to play. when one of the acquaintances asked shyam to go and bring something from his house, he refused. Shyam told the acquaintance that his father, mother and sister were hanging and he is feeling scared," a police spokesperson told Uniindia.
Circumstances that led to the family’s alleged suicide remains unclear at this time, but police beleive financial crisis could have been the reason that forced them to take the extreme step, adding it was intriguing that the boy was not a part of the suicide pact.
“As Sonu was unemployed the family was facing financial crisis due to which there used to be an altercation between the couple often. It is being assumed that they had an altercation on Tuesday due to which they took extreme steps," police sources said.
The bodies were brought down and sent to a medical examiner’s office where an autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of death.
A further probe is underway.
A similar mass suicide tragedy was reported in Montreux, Switzerland, where five members of a wealthy French family gripped by conspiracy theories linked to Covid jumped "one after the other" from their seventh-floor apartment.
The bodies of 40-year-old Eric David, his 41-year-old wife, Nasrine Feraoun, her twin sister Narjisse, and the couple’s 8-year-old daughter were found at the bottom of an apartment building near the casino in the plush town of Lake Geneva, just 45 minutes after police arrived at their door, the Swiss police said.
However, their 15-year-old son survived the tragedy that happened on March 24, in the Swiss resort town. He remains in a coma in a stable condition in the hospital.
