Summer TV is just starting to get good, but tonight one series is set to take fans out of this world. Seriously, aside from the cheesy sci-fi adverts, Halle Berry’s new series “Extant” premieres tonight and this series is like anything you have ever seen on TV. In addition to Halle Berry starring in this series, Hollywood filmmaker and sci-fi extraordinaire, Steven Spielberg is the executive producer. Through his Amblin Entertainment production company Spielberg provides “Extant” with the sci-fi bones that this series will truly need to be effective, in addition to “Extant” Spielberg’s production company is responsible for CBS’ other sci-fi adventure, “Under the Dome” which is successfully entering its second season.
In the show, which premieres tonight with its pilot episode “Re-Entry” Berry portrays, Molly Woods, an astronaut adjusting back to life on Earth with her husband, played by Goran Visnjic, and her young son after a 13-month solo mission in outer space. Despite the seemingly successful space mission and her happy reunion at home, something happened up in space and now Molly is 3 months pregnant.
Berry revealed that viewers will discover just how Molly became pregnant while she was up in space, supposedly alone, but not just yet. "That's going to be really interesting as that storyline unfolds, what actually happened in space," Berry said on "CBS This Morning." "You find out, but slowly," she added. "It's very mysterious, very suspenseful and there are many twists and turns along the way getting to that result of what actually happened."
While Molly’s surprise pregnancy is the central mystery of the series, there is a lot going on, and even some suspicious activity on Earth as well. The shows stays grounded due to its ability to include real world drama in this sci-fi thriller, the premiere episode takes place mostly on Earth and focuses on Molly’s reunion with her son and scientist husband. However fans will be treated to flashbacks of Molly up in space, including one scene where she sees someone or something.
While the flashbacks will keep fans guessing into the mystery of Molly’s womb, the technology and future advancements on Earth in this series will keep viewers mystified. According to CBS, “Extant” is set in an “unspecified future with lots of gizmos and gadgets,” but one of these pieces of technology is more impressive than the rest—Molly’s son. Molly and John’s son Ethan is a “humanic,” which is pretty much a little robot, and while John love shim like his own flesh and blood Molly apparently sees a more sinister side to his artificial intelligence.
