One of the rarest things for moms to find is guidance on how to establish strong lines of communication and discipline with their sons, while still giving them the freedom to be and discover themselves.
With Mother’s Day around the corner, AXE YOU and Parenting Expert Jeannette Kaplun want to provide a little extra support to all the extraordinary moms who are raising the next generation of gentleman with these useful tips on raising teen sons:
- Remember to listen. Many parents tend to have conversations in which they do all the speaking, and forget how important it is for your son to feel you are paying attention to what they have to say. Also, it’s the best way to learn about what is really going on in his life. Avoid lectures, because teens usually tune out.
- Don’t forget about consistency. Parents of toddlers know how important routines and consistent rules are, but as children grow up, we tend to relax a bit. As children become teenagers, even if the rules evolve, you should still be consistent when enforcing them. Be clear about your expectations, your household rules, and what the consequences are if your son disregards them. Remember that you need to enforce the rules in the same way with different children if you have more than one child.
- Keep in mind your son doesn’t have to like you. Many moms think the effectiveness of their parenting correlates with how much their child likes them. This is a myth. As a parent, it’s more important to be respected as a leader and to guide, rather than bend to a teenager’s whims.
- Do foster his independence. It’s important for teens to feel you trust them and to empower them with more independence as they prove to you that they can be trusted. Allow your son to make his own choices, especially when it comes to grooming and personal care, if he wants to choose his own fragrance suggest a refreshing and masculine with a modern twist such as AXE YOU body spray, so he feels free to be himself.
