The Eurovision Song Contest has been running for over 60 years and is one of the biggest musical events in the world. Eurovision 2016 will take place in Stockholm and this year will be the first time it airs live in the United States.
Each country that participates in the contest submits an original song to be performed on live television and radio. The winner is determined by the viewers, with each country voting for their favorite tunes, not including their homeland. Last year's winner was Måns Zelmerlöw of Sweden who took the prize for "Heroes."
“Eurovision is a cultural phenomenon we have admired from afar for years,” Chris McCarthy, Logo general manager, told The Guardian. “We are thrilled to bring the event to US audiences and cheer alongside the rest of the world.” Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor of Eurovision, also weighed in saying: "We’ve been working on the deal for many years. It’s difficult to come into the US with products, because the variety of programs is enormous and also because Eurovision is a very typical European phenomenon with a lot of countries you might not have heard of in the US, so it’s also difficult to explain what it is. But they are very happy at Viacom that this agreement is now in place – and so are we.”
With increasing interest in the U.S. for the popular song contest, it is a great step forward that it is now available on an American channel. Logo has the rights to air Eurovision 2016 and will be live streaming the event on Saturday, May 14, starting at 3 p.m. ET. The show will air commercial free and you can watch video on Logo's official website. "Come Together" is this year's theme with Eurovision taking place from Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.
