Gunfire and an explosion at one of two separate, but related, shootings in Dallas and neighboring DeSoto has left four people dead and four more injured.

The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Erbie Bowser. Authorities say it appears he was trying to kill a former girlfriend and his estranged wife. It is believed both are among the victims.

Police took the suspected shooter into custody without incident at the second scene and said Bowser is being held at DeSoto Jail pending charges and further details will be forthcoming after he is officially charged.

Officials say the rampage began about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in Dallas at a home in the 7100 block of Long Canyon Trail, near West Wheatland Road and Mountain Creek Parkway. He killed two people and wounded two others there, police said.

Toya Smith, 43, and her daughter, Tasmia Allen, 17, both died at the scene. Smith's 14-year-old son and a 17-year-old female family friend were injured and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, according to police reports.

The gunman then moved about seven miles to a home in the 100 block of Galleria Drive in DeSoto. He tossed some type of explosive device into the home, police said, before opening fire again. Two unidentified adult females died while an 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old boy were injured.

A 3-year-old child in the DeSoto home appeared to be unhurt and was turned over to Child Protective Services, police said.

When police arrived, Bowser pretended to be among the victims and seemed catatonic, giving only his name, supposed rank and a serial number. Authorities say Bowser has tattoos indicating he may have been an Army Ranger, but court records suggest he was not a member of the armed forces.

Officers determined he was their suspect and took him into custody. They also confiscated a pocket knife from him.

Bowser has been arrested before for violating a protective order and evading arrest. He was also arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Bowser was part of the Dallas Mavericks "Mavs ManiAACs" male dance team. He was listed on the ManiAACs page for last season and described himself as a special education teacher.

Mesquite Independent School District confirmed Bowser was employed as a special education teacher and a volunteer coach in the district from 2001 to 2010, when he resigned "on good terms."
