A hit-and-run driver fatally struck Andy Medina, a 23-year-old skateboarder, Friday night in San Juan Capistrano, California. According to authorities and eyewitnesses, Medina was in a crosswalk when Andrew Christopher Michaels’, 19, truck collided with him, causing him to fly 20 feet in the air.
Andy was transported to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, California, to be treated after the accident. While on the doctor’s table, Jennifer Medina, the nurse in charge and Andy’s sister, thought she was trying to save John Doe’s life until she recognized her brother’s wallet.
“I recognized the wallet…and she [her coworker] opened it up and it was my brother’s face,” Jennifer told NBC Los Angeles. “Everything just collapsed. I just couldn’t hold it together.”
According to the Daily News, Jennifer created a GoFundMe page for her family where she wrote about the experience of working on the “day I feared the most:” “The Dr. tried to bring his heart back but there was too much trauma to the brain,” she wrote.
Orange County’s Sheriff’s department reported that Michaels, the suspected driver, had been arrested in connection with the crash on Saturday night.
