At a Senate hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 15, Simone Biles and three other notable gymnasts testified against Olympic doctor Larry Nassar as they called for the prosecution of the FBI agents who attempted to cover up the crimes of the disgraced U.S. team physician.
Simone Biles spoke to the Senate, detailing the incompetent and malicious treatment that the FBI gave to the women that Larry Nassar victimized as a handful of agents seemingly condoned and attempted to cover up the culture of recurring sexual abuse that the doctor was perpetrating, the Daily Beast reported.
“To be clear, I blame Larry Nassar and I also blame an entire system that enabled and perpetrated his abuse,” Biles told the Senate.
As they opened up about how the FBI treated them when they came forward, Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney said that she was shocked at how the Indianapolis office sat on the case and attempted to fabricate her own testimony, according to the BBC.
“They chose to fabricate, to lie about what I said and protect a serial child molester,” she said. “What is the point of reporting abuse if our own FBI agents are going to take it upon themselves to bury that report in a drawer?”
The agents, identified as Michael Langeman, who has been fired, and W. Jay Abbott, who retired, did not interview most of the women who came forward and attempted to convince Maroney that the abusive behavior Nassar did was not a big deal.
“It shocks the conscience when the failures come from law enforcement itself, yet that’s exactly what happened in the Nassar case,” Senator Dick Durbin said in the opening of the hearing.
Christopher Wray, the current director of the FBI, apologized for the behavior of the agents and attempted to reassure the Senate and the women on the stand that this won’t be repeated in the future.
Larry Nassar, a U.S. sports doctor for the women’s national gymnastics team, was sentenced to 175 years in prison in 2018 for the assault of over 150 women, as well as 60 years for child pornography charges, according to Vox.
