Two members of the Mexican music group Emiliano Cuevas y Grupo Penumbre were tragically shot and killed in the parking lot of a commercial plaza in the southern part of Querétaro, Mexico, early on Friday morning.

The attack occurred shortly after they finished a performance at a bar called El Mezcalito, located in the La Alhambrada neighborhood. Local authorities believe the incident was a targeted assault, as reported by the Querétaro Public Security Department on social media.

The victims were Emiliano Cuevas, the lead vocalist of the group, and another band member. The group, known for its regional Mexican music, had built a strong following on social media, with thousands of followers on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. Emiliano Cuevas himself was active on social media, often sharing snippets of his daily life and updates on his musical career with his 31,400 followers on Instagram-

According to the Mexican media, the incident happened while the musicians were heading to their vehicles in the plaza's parking lot after their performance. Gunmen approached and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Despite the swift response by local law enforcement, no suspects have been apprehended. The area has seen increased violence, making it challenging for authorities to track down the perpetrators.

Violence against artists in Mexico

This is not the first time a musician has been targeted in Mexico. Over the years, numerous artists have fallen victim to violence, especially those involved in genres like regional Mexican music and corridos, which sometimes depict the life of the underworld. High-profile cases include the murders of musicians like Valentín Elizalde in 2006 and Sergio Vega in 2010, both of whom were known for singing about controversial themes related to drug cartels and organized crime.

Authorities are currently investigating the motives behind the attack on Emiliano Cuevas and his group, as the violence that has plagued the country continues to affect members of the entertainment industry. The area around El Mezcalito bar, where the group performed, has a history of violent incidents, including past shootings and even a homicide related to a brawl outside the venue(

The deaths of Emiliano Cuevas and his fellow band member have shocked fans and fellow musicians, who took to social media to express their grief and demand justice. Meanwhile, local police are intensifying their efforts to capture those responsible and bring them to justice.
