Elon Musk's AI system, Grok, is being used to debunk President Donald Trump's claim that the U.S. has given Ukraine $350 billion in aid since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Grok cited verified government reports and independent tracking organizations, stating the actual amount of U.S. aid approved for Ukraine stands at approximately $175 billion as of February 28, 2025. Of that, $106 billion has gone directly to Ukraine, with the remainder supporting U.S. military stockpiles, defense industries and regional security efforts.

Trump posted on Truth Social that Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, talked the U.S. "into spending $350 Billion Dollars," and claimed the U.S. has "spent $200 Billion Dollars more than Europe" on aid to Ukraine. Trump has also falsely claimed that the Russian assault on Ukraine was initiated by Zelensky.

Tensions heightened Friday during a meeting between Trump and Zelensky in the Oval Office, where the leaders were expected to finalize an agreement with Ukraine promising the U.S. access to rare earth minerals. Trump had previously demanded $500 billion worth of rare earths as payment for U.S. aid. However, no agreement was reached during the meeting, with the increasingly heated conversation turning instead to what Trump and Vice President JD Vance described as disrespect and a lack of gratitude from Zelensky.

When asked, "How much has America sent to Ukraine," Grok shared official figures from the US Department of State, Congressional Budget Office, and Kiel Institute to determine "Congress has approved approximately $175 billion in emergency funding to support Ukraine and related efforts since the war began."

The breakdown of U.S. aid includes:
• $65.9 billion in military assistance
• $26.8 billion in direct economic support
• $2.8 billion in humanitarian aid
• Additional funding for U.S. operations and replenishment of stockpiles

Moreover, a significant portion of the military aid is spent in the U.S.—funding domestic weapons production rather than being transferred directly to Ukraine.

Grok has reportedly had its ability to critique claims from Musk limited, as X posts written by Musk have been flagged as misinformation by the AI. Musk has also recently sparred with his own Community Notes feature, which allows users on X to add clarifying information to misleading posts.
