28-year-old Elisangela Borborema Rosa was accidentally shot through the mouth with a harpoon when her husband's spear gun fired. Rosa's husband was cleaning his spear fishing gun when it accidentally went off hitting Rosa; going through her mouth and getting stuck in her spine. The BBC says the harpoon came within 0.4 inches of killing Rosa.
Rosa was in the kitchen minding her own business while her husband was cleaning his harpoon gun. She was hit by the harpoon which went straight into her mouth and was lodged in her cervical spine.
Rosa was immediately rushed to the hospital and then to a team of specialists that operated on the injured woman. Doctors say Rosa will make a full recovery.
In the x-ray, the harpoon is clearly visible and going through the woman's face. It is a harsh image to see and it is by all accounts a miracle this women survived. Looking at the x-ray you would have to ask yourself how Rosa didn't lose her head.
Once Rosa is able to speak, investigators will question her to get a clearer picture of what happened. The Daily News said a police spokesperson issued a statement saying,
"Everything indicates it was an accident, but we are investigating."
