Mexico squares off against Nigeria in Abu Dhabi's Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium on Friday in the Sub-17 2013 World Cup, where it will try to notch its third all-time Cup victory. After their bad opening loss against Nigeria, Mexico managed to net victories against Iraq (3-1) and Sweden (1-0) which let them qualify for the second round, where they knocked off Italy (2-0), Brazil (11-10 in a penalty shootout) and Argentina (3-0) to advance to the match against Nigeria, which has had a much easier time in this year's action. In the Round of 16, Nigeria took down Iran (4-1), Uruguay (2-0) and knocked in three goals without a corresponding reply in semifinal action against Sweden.
The Nigerians are currently tied with Brazil as the most successful nation in the Sub-17 competition's history, having taken home the title in 1985, 1993, and 2007. Their Sub-17 teams have also managed to bring home silver medals on three separate occasions -- 1987, 2001, and 2009. Mexico's squads have been pretty successful themselves, with championships in 2005 and 2011, though not to the same level as Nigeria.
