Ed Sheeran just announced that he is vanishing from the music scene. While he did not say why this could be connected to his various legal problems.
Nobody thought the day would come, but it is here now. The "Thinking Out Loud" singer will stop crooning for a while, he said so himself. After two years of touring, the well-loved redhead announced that he will be taking a hiatus on his music career.
Sheeran made the quite surprising and devastating announcement after wrapping his 260th show with the quite telling song, “You Need Me, I Don’t You.” The show was held at Chantry Park in England, as reported by the NY Post, and the singer certainly got a full audience.
Even though it cannot erase the sad feelings, the singer did assure the fans that this will be temporary - 18 months of absence to be precise. "There is something very bittersweet about it. I love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich. This is my last gig for probably 18 months,” said the “I Don't Care" singer.
While he did not say the exact reasons why, it has been alleged that the break was for him to be able to sort out all the legal troubles he is currently in. He is facing quite a lot.
First, two weeks from now, he will be appearing at his scheduled court date over the accusations that “Thinking Out Loud,” the hit single he released in 2014, was mainly a ripoff of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 hit “Let’s Get It On.”
Asset Sales, the company that owns the partial copyrights of this song and other Gaye's music is the one doing the accusing and demanding Sheeran to pay up $100 million for the said crime.
Apart from this case, he is also not receiving royalties for his massively successful hit, “Shape of You" because of another set of allegations. According to a musician by the name of Sam Chokri, the catchy chorus of this specific single was lifted from his song, "Oh Why.”
Chokri also has enough cause to think so. According to him, he sent his song to Sheeran’s team because he thought it could bring him a possible collaboration with the famous singer. This case is reportedly going to be heard in 2020 and might be a huge fight.
Outside his music career is another legal issue he has to sort out. His own neighbors are accusing him of being too extravagant at their expense. It can be remembered that Sheeran was able to build a massive pond on his English estate, after securing a permit to do so.
Based on the permit, the pond is reportedly for “wildlife preservation . . . providing a natural habitat for breeding and wetland invertebrates such as dragonflies and water beetles.” His neighbors are not having it, disagreeing with why the pond was built. They claimed the pond was indeed a pool, one built to satisfy the musician's lavish lifestyle.
Sheeran certainly is optimistic about the outcomes of these cases, given the fact that he knew he will return to the music scene one day. “See you in a few years’ time,” he told his sad British crowd.
