An 87-year-old woman who is mute and disabled as a result of a stroke became the unfortunate victim of a man who initially passed himself as a window cleaner. The suspect was identified as Dean Lennox who was also reportedly a drug addict.
The day before the incident, Lennox allegedly visited some flats at Torquay and offered to clean their windows. However, he returned during the early hours of May 20 to invade the home of the 87-year-old and rob her of her jewelry.
The whole incident was captured on video via the victim’s daughter showing the old woman helpless and frightened. The old woman could not move or call for help after previously suffering from a stroke.
Lennox carted away three rings, including a gold wedding band reportedly worth £90 in cash and a wallet that belonged to the old’s woman’s late husband.
The 40-year-old man admitted to the crime and is allegedly a drug addict. He was jailed for three years and four months per reports.
According to prosecutor Brian Fitzherbert, the old woman lived in the second-floor flat at a block with supported accommodations for retired people.
The robbery was discovered the next day when the daughter of the old woman checked an app on her phone at around 7:05 a.m. it was there where she noticed that the motion cameras in her mother’s room were activated at around 3:30 a.m.
When she checked, she saw the man standing in her mother’s darkroom. Lennox was dressed in a hooded top, trousers with cargo pockets and trainers as he prowled the disabled woman’s room using his mobile phone as a torch.
The woman was left staring, helpless because of her condition. She was left crying and distressed as the robber did his dirty work. Checks at a local jeweler revealed a man matching Lennox's description had sold three items for £45 at 10:00 a.m. that day. All were recovered by officers.
"This is one of the worst domestic burglaries that I've seen in a long time,” Judge David Evans said. "She was utterly helpless to do anything about it."
