Last month, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” announced that aspiring presidential candidate Donald Trump was to host its November 7 episode. Some thought this was merely a joke, not only because Univision was the first network to cut ties with the mogul by cancelling the Miss Universe pageant, but also because giving Trump a platform with other than journalistic purposes was absolutely inexcusable. Yes, we’ve seen endless politicians appear on the show demonstrating how they’re human and can laugh about themselves, but having Trump host an entire episode after being openly racist and making demeaning comments about Latinos left and right? Not ok. Also, we fully agree with what actor John Leguizamo said: “This is celebrating somebody who, if he’d said those things about any other ethnic group, he would not be on ‘SNL’.”
Apparently no comments, no celebrity friends, no amount of protesters, common sense or principles convinced creator Lorne Michaels to walk away from the insulting decision. So what actually happened on the episode? Well, I can’t call myself partial, but consolidating most reviews, it seems like no one actually found the episode even close to hilarious. Was Trump only on for 12 minutes total as an attempt to soften the blow? Maybe. Did it help? Not in the least. Was having Larry David yell “racist” at Trump during his monologue, an intent to show how they really felt? Probably. Do we care? Not at all.
While most of the cast did seem pretty uncomfortable, they probably rejoiced when they heard how high the ratings were. The saddest part is, according to “SNL” the Trump episode had the highest ratings the show has had in almost four years. It exceeded the 41st season premiere hosted by Miley Cyrus, by 47 percent. Watch their sad attempt at telling Trump he's a racist:
