In case anybody needed any proof that dogs are people's best friends, look no further. A 6-year-old mix-breed brought home the body of a baby girl in Oklahoma City, carrying it as if it was a puppy.

The homeowner was away, but Luke, as the pet is called, took the corpse to the house-sitter, who was terrified upon seeing what was inside of the plastic bag.

"It was three to five pounds, and still very fresh," she said, adding that Luke would never hurt anyone and there was no trauma in the newborn.

"He was carrying it just like a momma pup," she told KFOR station, "and laid it at my feet." She stated that the dog was just trying to help the child.

"I believe he found it, picked it and brought it. There was no trauma you could tell he inflicted," she said.

Police in Oklahoma were stunned by the news. "We don't know where the baby came from," Police Captain Dexter Nelson said. "If it was born in the area or if someone brought the baby here to dispose of it."

It is also unknown if the baby was born alive or stillborn.

Oklahoma, just as the rest of the 50 states, have some form of "safe haven" legislation that allows parents to anonymously leave a newborn at a designated safe location without fear of prosecution for neglect or abandonment. Captain Nelson said that this should be a reminder that abandoning a baby is never the answer.

"If someone has a baby they don't want, they can take the baby to a fire station or a hospital, no questions asked," he said.
