Prince Harry and Meghan Markle haven’t had it easy in the past one year. The revelatory interview in the documentary titled “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey” by host Tom Bradby was proof.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex took everyone by surprise by being unabashedly vocal about their struggles with ruthless media scrutiny and the like. It turns out that host Bradby already saw it coming. He sensed everything wasn’t entirely rosy behind the scenes and even found the royal couple “a bit bruised and vulnerable.”
“I went intending to make a documentary that was always going to be about their work in Africa and then a little bit about where they are at in life and I knew that everything wasn't entirely rosy behind the scenes—that's true," said Bradby in “Good Morning America.”
Bradby, who attended the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018, enthused that observing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the course of their trip to Africa helped him understand their frame of mind better.
Going by the “whatever happens, happens” approach, Bradby decided to put out the truth— in his capacity as a journalist. As per a popular report, he made an attempt to narrate their story “as empathetically as he could.”
“We had a couple of private heart to hearts before we did the interview and I said, ‘Let’s just go out and tell the truth as you see it,” Bradby said. “The thing about Harry is, whether in private or in public if you ask him an honest question he’ll give you an honest answer, for better or worse,” he added.
The documentary saw Meghan Markle speak up rather emotionally about her struggles as a royal. She complained about the “stiff British lip” before pouring her angst over her personal struggles as a new Royal. Prince Harry spoke along similar lines and opened about Prince William and him “being on different paths” at the moment.
By the end of it, Bradby concluded with an important message— he wished for the royal household and fans world over to allow space and privacy to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
