Princess Diana’s marriage to Queen Elizabeth II’s heir, Prince Charles, started as a fairytale romance but ultimately ended in a disaster. But what many don’t know is whether the ex-couple’s relationship improved or worsened after their divorce in 1996.
It’s actually a question that has divided royal family fans to this day. When someone posted the query “Did Prince Charles and Princess Diana have a friendly relationship after they divorced?” on Quora, the responses are basically divided between two camps.
On one hand, there are those who say that Charles and Diana didn’t become friends after their divorce. In fact, their relationship got worse.
“After those two interviews aired and Queen Elizabeth told them to get a divorce, they didn’t have a relationship,” Deanna Eppers wrote on Quora. “Prince Charles and Diana had to communicate regarding the logistics of sharing their sons, but that was easily done through their assistants.”
On the other hand, there are those who believe that their relationship actually became better postdivorce. While they may not be the best of friends or on the same level of closeness between the also-divorced couple Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, many still believe that Diana and Charles were better off when their split was formalized.
“Although Charles and Diana were never the best of friends, they became much more amicable after the divorce and were able to attend events for William and Harry without acrimony,” Deb Stratas wrote. “I believe Diana always loved Charles — and so at some level treasured the odd encounter with her ex.”
Another Quora user even said that there’s evidence to back up Diana and Charles’ less adversarial attitude after divorce. “Actually there’s photographic evidence as well as admission from people who knew her best such as relatives and friends (the ones who did not write tell-all books on Diana after she died) who say Charles and Diana were on better footing when Diana died,” Quora user Melissa Marshall explained.
Marshall even believed that they might have become friends once more given enough time. Unfortunately, that wasn’t fated to happen as Diana’s time ran out.
The following year, Diana died in a Paris car crash, along with Dodi Fayed. The chilling thing was that she predicted how she will die. “They will do it when I am in a small plane, in a car when I am driving, or in a helicopter,” the Princess of Wales once told her designer, Roberto Devorik.
