The Derrick Rose rape case has taken over media with the star possibly facing jail time if convicted. It is now being reported that a police officer connected to the case was found dead.

According to the Los Angeles Times, LAPD Officer Nadine Hernandez was found dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest. The wound is believed to be self-inflicted suggesting a possible suicide.

Her body was found while the police officers were responding to a home in Whittier, California. The home that Hernandez was found in appeared to belong to a retired LAPD Lieutenant, but at this time it is still unconfirmed if the home was also her current residence.

Hernandez was taken to an area hospital as soon as possible, where she was later pronounced dead just before 3:30p.m. Investigators found a handgun on the premises, but there was no sign of foul play.

The death of the officer who had been investigating rape allegations against New York Knicks star is currently being treated as a suicide for the time being. The department is determined to continue the investigation.

“However, this is an ongoing investigation and we will continue to collaborate with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office as part of our investigation.”

The publication reports that Hernandez was one of the two detectives assigned to the high-profile case. She is also a member of LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division Special Assault Section. There is no word on if her affiliation led to the case of her death.

Despite this tragedy, Rose is still undergoing court hearings in the case. The woman, who is still unnamed for legal reasons, claims that the basketball star and his two friends gang-raped her in August 2013. A new development has come up with the case with lawyers for the plaintiff allegedly withholding text messages from the defense that the woman allegedly sent Rose.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the federal judge in the case may consider declaring a mistrial.

Rose has not spoken out about the death of Hernandez.
