Following the death of Donald Trump’s ex-wife Ivana, the former President and two of his children got their questioning postponed.
In connection with a New York civil investigation into their business dealings, Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr. and daughter Ivanka had been scheduled for depositions starting Friday, reported the Associated Press. But because of Ivana's death, which was announced Thursday, New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office said that it agreed to postpone the depositions.
Attorney general’s office spokesperson Delaney Kempner said in a statement that they offer their "condolences to the Trump family." The delay is temporary and the "depositions will be rescheduled as soon as possible." No new dates have been announced for the depositions.
Ivana, who was the mother of Ivanka, Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, died at her Manhattan home at the of age 73. There did not "appear to be any criminality" related to Ivana's death, the New York Police Department (NYD) said Thursday, reported CNN. Police got a 911 call about an "aided individual" at about 12.40 p.m., and cops found a "73 year-old female unconscious and unresponsive," according to a statement.
In a social media post Thursday afternoon, Trump called Ivana a “wonderful, beautiful, and amazing woman, who led a great and inspirational life." He was married to her from 1977 to 1992.
As for the investigation, James alleges that the Trump Organization inflated the values of golf courses, skyscrapers and other holdings to get insurance, loans and other benefits. The Trump Organization is led by Trump Jr. with his brother, Eric, who sat for a deposition with the New York investigators in 2020. Ivanka, who served as senior White House senior advisor during her Trump's presidency, is a former top executive in the Trump Organization, according to CNBC.
Trump, who has denied the allegations, said that it’s common to seek the best valuations in the real estate industry. The former President, a Republican, has dismissed the probe as part of a politically motivated “witch hunt” by Democrats such as James. The Manhattan district attorney has also been overseeing a criminal inquiry that parallels James’ investigation.
There are also investigations in Congress into Trump's role in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot and in Georgia into his efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election.
