The Indianapolis Colts will play host to the Denver Broncos on Sunday evening in one of Week 7's most hotly anticipated matchups, as longtime Colt Peyton Manning returns to his old home for a showdown between two of the best-performing teams in the NFL. All eyes will be on Manning, especially after Colts owner Jim Irsay spoke about the decision not to pursue him in terms that many interpreted to be a bit more flippant than necessary. "We've changed our model a little bit," Irsay said of his team's management, and gesturing at his Super Bowl ring added, "because we wanted more than one of these." Manning has refused to respond to Irsay's comment, though his coach John Fox took up on his behalf. "To me, in my opinion, they were disappointing and inappropriate," Fox said in a SIRIUS NFL Radio interview this week. "I mean, Peyton would never say anything. He's too classy to do that. But they sounded a little ungrateful and unappreciative to me for a guy that has set a standard, won a Super Bowl, won division titles, won four MVP awards. I'd be thankful with that one Super Bowl ring because there's a lot of people that don't have one." Irsay responded on Twitter, dismissing the controversy and saying that he'd meant that if "we gave Peyton better SP Teams [sic] n [sic] Def [sic], we would have won more than 1 Sup/Bowl [sic], instead of asking Peyton 2do [sic] too much."
The 4-2 Colts will be coming off a lousy Week 6 performance against San Diego, in what many have speculated was due to eagerness to get past that week and onto their big game against the 6-0 Broncos, who are, remarkably enough, tied for first in the AFC South with the 6-0 Chiefs. The Broncs will also benefit from the return of Von Miller after he was suspended for six games -- in their last road game, Denver gave up 48 points to Dallas, and Miller is expected to give their D a much-needed boost. Manning will be expected to continue his record-setting season -- 178-240 passes completed, 2,179 yards, 22 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 128.8 QB rating.
