Demián Bichir is one of the most celebrated actors in Mexico. Though if you recognize him at all, it's probably from "Weeds," where he played the shady mayor of Tijuana and the indie film "A Better Life" which earned him an Oscar nomination.
Bichir is now starring in the new series "The Bridge" from "Homeland' writer-producer Meredith Stiehm that revolves around two detectives who must work together to hunt down a serial killer operating on both sides of the U.S. and Mexican border.
The show stars Demián Bichir and Diane Kruger who play two detectives one from Mexico and the other from the U.S. who must work alongside one another to stop a serial killer operating on both sides of the border. The series is set on the border between El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico and is an adaptation of the international hit "Bron," which took place at the Denmark-Sweden border.
FX Networks President John Landgraf already feels the show is a success. The Hollywood Reporter notes Landgraf as saying,
"For years networks having been trying develop a drama series set on the U.S.-Mexican border without any success. I'm thrilled to say that Meredith Stiehm and Elwood Reid have become the first to crack that creative code, and they have done so magnificently. There have been great films set in that world - No Country for Old Men and Lone Star come to mind - but never a great TV series. This one is special."
Bichir said he was drawn to the project because of its relevance: "With these two countries being together, you can't blame one for what's happening to the other. We share the same responsibility." Reports LA Times.
Both Actors Bichir and Kruger said they were very excited for the opportunity to play such complex characters.
"He's a really well-written character," said Bichir. "He believes he can make a difference, which is not an easy thing to do given the circumstances. But he knows how to walk on fire and not get burned."
In addition to the series leads, The Bridge has enlisted guest stars Ted Levine as a member of Cross' team, Annabeth Gish, as a wealthy widow with a ranch to run, Thomas M. Wright as a wolf of a man and The Descendants' Matthew Lillard as a cocky reporter.
After its debut, the new 13-episode series will continue to air on Wednesdays during the 10 p.m. time slot on the FX network.
