Demi Lovato announced she’s been three years sober on Sunday night via Twitter. The 22-year-old singer celebrated her big milestone after checking into rehab in 2011 to treat bipolar disorder, cutting, and bulimia. I never knew sobriety was possible for me,” said Lovato. “But with the love and support I've been given from my friends, fans, and family… I now celebrate my 3rd birthday.” Demi has been very open about her struggles and even admitted she’d come close to going back to rehab last summer, but boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama “called her out on it.”
Lovato opened up in a revealing interview with Fitness Magazine, “I almost went back to rehab for my eating disorder last summer. I was obsessing over food and terrified of it at the same time. Wilmer noticed and called me out on it, which was a relief,” said the star. “I was done being afraid of food and so tired of overeating and not knowing why I did it. Now I'm on a structured meal plan. I eat four small meals and two snacks a day. It's teaching me portion control.”
Demi is very passionate about helping women and young women accept their bodies. She recently joined forces with Tampax and Kotex for a campaign to help women feel confident and love their bodies especially during that time of the month. “I've learned to appreciate my body for what it is. It helps to remind myself how far I've come. I recently saw pictures from my first tour, and I spent that whole summer performing in the heat in a red leather jacket because I was ashamed to show my arms. And that was when I was 105 pounds! This tour, I've had the confidence to show my arms at every single concert. It may seem like a small thing, but for me, that's huge.”
