“Sober” singer Demi Lovato reportedly checks in to rehab days after sharing a 21 Savage deportation joke through Twitter. The former child star returned to a rehabilitation center in Hawaii, where she received treatment after last year’s overdose.
“Skyscraper” hitmaker Lovato made headlines last year when she was rushed to L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai hospital after the police responded to what appeared to be a heroin overdose. The news was shocking to many as Lovato’s friends and family were positive that she has already recovered from her addiction struggles after years of treatment and claimed to be sober for six years.
Lovato expressed her concern about her relapse in “Sober,” which was also released last year, prior to the alleged overdose. Few months after the overdose incident, she was released, and she took to Instagram her struggles.
“What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time,” she posted. “I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side,” she continued. Family, friends and fans expressed support to the singer and tweeted their positive messages to Lovato.
The “Camp Rock” star shows signs of recovery toward the end of 2018 and was reportedly dating fashion designer Henri Levy. The two have not confirmed anything yet. But during the Valentine week, Levy posted a photo on his Instagram account and called Lovato a beautiful soul. But what melted the hearts of her fans was the message he wrote: “I love you to the moon and back.”
Recent news, however, says that Lovato voluntarily checked herself back in rehabilitation amid a backlash against her. In early February, British-born 21 Savage was detained in Atlanta by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on account of his immigrant visa, which reportedly had expired in 2006. Many created jokes and memes on the rapper’s unfortunate potential deportation.
Lovato joined in the jokes via Twitter, but quite a number of people are not happy about it. The singer’s joke read: “So far 21 Savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.” This backfired and received a lot of negative feedback. Some even brought up her addiction struggles and said fans gave Lovato positive messages during her down times.
The backlash was so bad that she deactivated her Twitter. However, it is not confirmed if her returning back to rehab is caused by depression from the backlash or a relapse in addiction.
