The decomposed body of a 40-year-old woman and her 19-year-old mentally challenged son were found at their home in India’s Meerut on Wednesday, July 14.
The woman’s husband filed a complaint accusing a distant kin of the deceased woman of "killing the two over an illicit relationship".
The incident came to light after neighbors reported a foul smell emanating from the home in Bulandshahr’s Khurja Kotwali, which was reportedly locked from the inside.
"The bodies were badly decomposed. They may have died on Sunday or even before that," the Times of India quoted a neighbor as saying.
Neighbors say the family did not socialize much and had very few visitors.
Police officers responded to the home and recovered the decomposed bodies of the mother and son. The bodies were sent to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
According to the investigators, after the murder, the killer also took away the CCTV camera installed in the house.
The exact cause of death would be revealed once the autopsy results are out. Police say the woman’s husband has named a suspect in the complaint.
The suspect and the now-deceased woman were reportedly having an affair. Investigators say that the killer was providing financial help to the woman and son.
"The woman was living separately from her husband for long. It seems that the 'lover' had killed the woman and her son as he was fed up with the expenses and demands," Santosh Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), said.
The official said that an investigation is going on and efforts are being put in to nab the killer.
"We have filed an FIR and teams are raiding various places to arrest him," Singh said.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 26-year-old man was arrested after his adoptive mother's decomposed body was found wrapped in a bedsheet in her house in Nainwa town of Bundi district of Rajasthan, India, on Monday.
The body of 65-year-old Shantabai Swarnkar, a retired school teacher, was discovered after her neighbors complained of a foul smell emanating from the house
The accused, identified as Chandu alias Chandraprakash, was arrested after neighbors reported seeing him in the area at the time of the incident.
During interrogation, the accused man told police that he choked the victim to death as he was "fed up" with the woman who "harassed" him for money.
He was produced at a local court and has been remanded to three-day police custody.
