Ever wonder why Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are addressed as Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex, respectively? Why are they not called princesses like Princess Diana? Well, Camilla Parker Bowles might have something to do with it.
The Queen has given both Kate and Meghan the title “Duchess” on the ceremony of their wedding day. Prince William and Kate officially received the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on April 29, 2011. On the other hand, Prince Harry and Meghan officially became known as Duke and Duchess of Sussex on May 19, 2018.
Many were quick to question why William and Harry were called princes while their better halves were not called princesses when Diana, who was once married to Prince Charles, was called Princess Diana. Royal experts explained that Duchess of Cornwall Camilla’s decision had something to do with it.
Camilla Retains Title
Before Kate and Meghan took their royal spotlight, Camilla already has the center stage. She was often a subject of gossip involving scandal, extramarital affairs and breakups. Sources said that Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall had instant sparks flying around them when they first met. However, due to unfavorable circumstances, Prince Harry and Camilla never had the chance to hit off the first time.
Love found its way when Prince Charles and Camilla decided to make it official, three decades after. Prince Charles holds the official title “Charles, Prince of Wales,” and it is just right that his spouse takes the title “Princess of Wales.”
Camilla, however, decided not to take the title. Instead of using Princess of Wales, she retained her title Duchess of Cornwall. Since then, the Royal family has been using “Duchess” as title.
Respect To Diana And Two Sons
Despite the privilege of being called a princess, Camilla picked Duchess of Cornwall. The stated reason for this was that the duchess wanted to respect the late Diana and her two sons — William and Harry.
Princess Consort
While Camilla may not be a princess by title now, she may be called princess in the future. Experts say that once Prince Charles is crowned king, Camilla will become princess consort.
The Princes
While Kate and Meghan are married to Prince William and Prince Harry, both princes do not hold the title Prince of Wales because Prince Charles holds that title. If they were to take the correct titles, they would have been Princess Henry of Wales and Princess William of Wales.
