Dave Grohl knows what he is talking about - and he is not afraid to say it out loud.
The "Foo Fighters" front man had just one piece of advice to share with his fellow musicians: cherish your voice. Discover it, use it, feed it and do not let anybody tell you that it is wrong.
He also made a point about just enjoy what you like without shame.
"Forget guilty pleasure," he said. "What about just pleasure?" He noted that the Internet sensation "Gangnam Style" was one of his favorite songs of the past decade.
The former "Nirvana" drummer spoke for 55-minutes to an audience of 15,000 people, and kept the tone upbeat throughout his gem-filled speech. "Who should ask to determine the value of a voice? 'The Voice'?," he said, referring to the hit contest that features Usher and Shakira as judges.
He proceeded to imagine what former judge Christina Aguilera would tell a young Bob Dylan singing his masterpiece "Blowing In The Wind."
"You were a little nasally and sharp," Grohl gimmicked.
"Who cares? It's your voice," he said. "Cherish it, respect it, nurture it, stretch it, scream until it's gone."
In between pearls of wisdom, Grohl found time to recount his own beginnings in the music world. As a child, rock and roll was his religion, he said.
"The record store was my church, the rock stars were my saints, their songs were my hymns."
He also remembered the "Nirvana" fallen idol, singer Kurt Cobain. Grohl said Cobain had a hard time with success, something he had never really expected to get. "Guilt is a cancer. It will confine you, torture you, destroy you as an artist."
