A father from Queens reportedly found the remains of a dead woman hidden in his son’s basement room in his house located in Laurelton on Father’s day, June 18.
The 65-year-old father, Gilbert Legendre, made the discovery in his Laurelton home located at 138th Avenue near Carson Street on Saturday afternoon, June 18, while he was cleaning the basement room where his 30-year-old son lived. He reportedly noticed a foul odor coming from somewhere in the basement. In order to find the source of the smell, Legendre lifted up a plywood board, and inside, he found a large hole with a plastic bag containing the remains of a woman, Daily News reported.
After making the gruesome discovery, Legendre immediately dialed 911 and alerted the officers regarding the incident.
“I didn’t show what I found,” Legendre said. “I just see something there and I just closed it back up and called them. I see something, maybe bones.”
Following this, the officers responded to the scene and took Legendre’s 30-year-old son into custody when he returned home later in the day. The son has since been charged with concealment of a human corpse and tampering with physical evidence.
“Right now I’m just still having problems analyzing it, you know?” Legendre said when he was asked about his son’s possible involvement in the death of the woman.
“It’s Father’s Day. I’m just trying to see if I can wrap my head around this. My whole day is messed up,” he added.
According to the investigating officers, Legendre’s 30-year-old son suffers from schizophrenia. Meanwhile, the identity of the deceased individual found in the basement has not been revealed and her cause of death is still unknown.
The officers suspect that the remains found belong to Legendre’s son’s former girlfriend, who also suffered from schizophrenia and suspiciously disappeared more than four months ago without leaving any trace, Flushing Post reported.
Officers added that they have launched an investigation into the incident to uncover further details regarding the identity of the victim and the cause of the woman’s death.
