A COVID-19 infected woman died on Wednesday, May 19th, after allegedly being savagely and mercilessly gangraped by three hospital employees in Patna, India.
The horrifying and inhumane incident reportedly happened at the private Paras-HMRI hospital in Patna, India where the patient was undergoing treatment for COVID-19. The victim's daughter posted about the ordeal on social media after her mother’s unfortunate demise.
The woman, 45, was reportedly admitted to the hospital on May 15, as she was showing severe symptoms of COVID-19. She would later be moved to the ICU for critical treatment on May 16. Even though timely treatment was provided, the woman's health deteriorated over the next few days, showing very little signs of recovery, reported India Times.
"My mother was sexually assaulted by three persons inside the hospital ICU on May 16. She had informed me about the incident. Since then her health condition deteriorated. I spoke to my relatives and the women's wing of the Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) about the incident," the deceased woman's daughter posted.
The woman’s daughter added that the hospital's administration was complicit in the act as doctors forcefully transitioned her mother to ventilator support following the report of the assault.
"I suspect that the doctors in the hospital intubated her in the neck so that she couldn't give her statement to the police. Now they have declared her dead," she said.
Physician P.D. Gupta from the hospital's management has released a detailed written statement explaining that the patient had become extremely restless and was not maintaining proper saturation on high flow oxygen, thus was put on mechanical invasive ventilation.
The statement says that even after being put on ventilator support, her vitals and other parameters kept deteriorating and she finally succumbed to her condition on May 19.
Gupta further clarified that the hospital management followed an internal inquiry based on the allegations by the woman’s daughter and asserted that the alleged incident did not happen in the hospital premises, reported National Herald.
According to Zee News, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought a time-bound investigation into the matter. Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of NCW, has written to the Chief Secretary of Bihar and the General of Police of Bihar to immediately intervene in the matter and register an FIR against the accused.
In a statement, Duty Magistrate of Patna M.L. Khan said he's ordered a post-mortem examination of the patient's body to confirm her cause of death.
"We have received a complaint from the deceased's person's daughter against the hospital administration. The names of the accused are not mentioned in her complaint. We have sent the body for post-mortem to ascertain if there was sexual assault. The hospital administration has cited corona infection as the cause of her death. Further investigation is on," he said.
