The family of two 24-year-old twins shared their family’s grief as both men passed away within. Joefred Varghese Gregory and Ralfred George Gregory since their childhood did everything together. The brothers’ close bond continued till they died within hours of each other after being infected with the novel coronavirus.

Gregory Raymond Raphael, of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India shared how close the brothers were. The brothers studied engineering together in college. After college, they both found jobs in Hyderabad, India. Due to the pandemic, the brothers had returned to Meerut as their employers allowed them to work from home.

The twins turned 24 on April 23 this year. The very next day they tested positive for COVID-19, Business Today reported. They initially remained isolated in their home. They continued to take medicines to combat the fever they had. Their condition did not improve over time.

The family was alarmed when the twins’ blood oxygen level dropped to 90. They consulted a doctor who advised the men to get admitted to a hospital. On May 1, the twins were admitted to a private hospital. After receiving treatment at the COVID ward, the twins' RT-PCR test came out negative. The doctors wanted to move them to the regular intensive care unit, however, their father insisted that they were not shifted from the COVID ward.

On May 13, the family got a call from the hospital informing them that Joefred had succumbed to the virus. Speaking to the Times of India, Raphael said that when he got the news of his son’s death he knew his other son would not be returning home. “Whatever happened to one, it happened to the other,” the mourning father said.

After Joefred’s death, Ralfred spoke to his mother over the phone. He told his mother that he was recovering. When he inquired about his twin brother’s health, his mother did not inform him of the death. She told him that his brother had been shifted to another hospital in Delhi. The men’s father claims that his son knew they were lying.

Hours after Jeofred lost his battle against COVID, Ralfred passed away on May 14. Raphael lamented that their family had been reduced to a family of three.

ALLAHABAD, INDIA - MAY 05: Relatives sit next to the body of a family member, who was thought to have died of Covid-19, for a funeral pyre to become available at a mass crematorium site on the banks of the Ganges river on May 05, 2021 in Allahabad, India. India recorded more than 360,000 coronavirus cases in a day for the 12th day in a row on Monday as the total number of those infected according to Health Ministry data neared 20 million. The real figure could be up to ten times higher, many health experts say, due to a lack of widespread testing or reporting, and only patients who succumbed in hospitals being counted. A new wave of the pandemic has totally overwhelmed the country's healthcare services and has caused crematoriums to operate day and night as the number of victims continues to spiral out of control.
