In the Mexico vs. Uruguay game last night, both team captains, Rafa Marquez and Diego Godín, had great performances and each scored a goal for their squad. However, the Mexican team dominated the thrilling match, which finished with a 3-1 score.

While all eyes (and expectations) were set on Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, Marquez turned proved he continues to be the team’s undisputable leader. At 37, he is considered pretty old by soccer standards but he proved, yet again, that age is just a number for an athlete and that he can play as good as ever.

Five minutes before the game ended, the no. 4 player smashed a beautiful goal that basically wiped out the goalkeeper, securing his team’s evident victory even further.

It is safe to say Uruguay had a rough start even before the game began! The Copa América officials played the wrong National Anthem for the team and fans; they played the Chilean one instead, which they later issued a statement to apologize for.

Next, Alvaro Pereira scored the first goal for Mexico with a pass from Andrés Guardado and then lost a player after two yellow cards, which Guardado also accumulated. Another point against Uruguay is that their star player, Luis Suarez, was also unable to play because of an injury, so that probably weaken the moral as well.

Other not-so-great moments in the game included Mexico fans continuing to use the “puto” chant every time the adversary team’s goalie had the ball in his possession, for which Univision issued a statement saying they do not approve or back this type of language or behavior.

All in all, critics are saying this has been the best game of the tournament so far, and we cannot wait to see more of Rafa Marquez’s top of the line skills in the upcoming games. The Mexican team will face Jamaica on Thursday, June 9, 9:00 p.m. ET, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
