The death of a woman in Mexico City has authorities pointing fingers at a neighboring state for having botched her autopsy with the intent to cover up her killer. The death of 27-year-old Ariadna Lopez has enraged women in Mexico who have now taken to the streets to protest against all the unsolved killings of women in the country.

According to AP News, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum alleged that Lopez’s killer is tied to the state prosecutor of Morelos, Uriel Carmona. She refused to elaborate on the links between the alleged killer and Carmona, but oddly enough the state of Morelos has been having quite a stretch of killings, particularly of women. The body of Lopez was found on the side of the road last week in Morelos where initial investigations were done. The victim was reported missing after leaving a restaurant the night before. Carmona said state forensic exam results showed the victim choked on her own vomit due to intoxication.

At the request of the victim's family, a second autopsy was performed in Mexico City. Mexico City prosecutor Ernestina Godoy refuted the initial findings after the new autopsy indicated that Lopez died from multiple traumas. Forensic experts in Mexico City found several lesions caused by blows on the victim’s body.

“It is clear that the prosecutor of Morelos state tried to cover up for the killer of a woman because of his ties to the killer,” the mayor said.

The conflicting results led to an outrage among women blaming long-standing issues on women killings. On Monday, dozens of women and other supporters marched the streets of downtown Mexico City demanding justice for Lopez and protesting the poor handling by the police of investigations, their misconduct and officials blaming the victims.

“We want justice done and prosecutor Uriel Carmona to pay the consequences of his words. He made a mockery of Mexico and of all women,” Lopez’s brother said.

Her case is just one of the many women killed in Mexico City. Last Friday, five bodies were found in the city of Cuautla in Morelos in two different spots. The bodies were all identified to be women. Carmona said a hand-lettered sign was found near the bodies, which the prosecutor said could be the work of a drug cartel settling some dispute.
